Substitutable materials
- Salted butter → Unsalted butter + pinch of salt
- American Cheese → Mozzarella (soft and stretchy), cream cheese (rich and nutty), cheddar (deep and rich flavor)
- Sugar → brown sugar (enhances caramel flavor), honey (subtle sweetness)
The creation process

1) Let the butter sit at room temperature for a few minutes or microwave it for 10 seconds.
💡 It shouldn't be completely melted, so it's good for spreading on bread.

2) Add 2 T of sugar to the softened butter and mix evenly.
💡 If you don't completely dissolve the sugar, it will caramelize on the surface during baking.

3) Layer two slices of sliced cheese on top of one slice of bread, and cover with another slice of bread.
💡 Two slices of cheese gives it a richer flavor, but just one thin slice gives it a cleaner taste.

4) Spread half of the butter spread on the tops of the bread slices.
💡 Use the back of a spoon or a silicone brush to spread it evenly around the edges.

5) Heat a skillet over low heat and add the bread, buttered side down.
💡 It's important to bake them slowly over low heat so that the outside is crispy and the cheese inside melts slowly.

6) Flip and brush the other side with the remaining butterscotch spread, and cook until golden brown, turning several times.
💡 The sugar will burn quickly once it touches the pan, so be sure to check it often with a spatula.

7) Lightly dust the top of the finished toast with powdered sugar.
💡 A dusting of powdered sugar makes it look like a cafe dessert.
Storage & Utilization
Buttered toast tastes best when it's warm.
Over time, the butter will harden and lose its texture, so refrigerate leftover toast and microwave it for 10 seconds, or reheat it slightly in a skillet.
Leftover butter spread can be used for mini toast, cracker dip, baked potatoes, and more.
It will keep for up to 3 days in the freezer.
