Preparation materials

  • 2 to 3 fish cakes
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 T cooking oil
  • 1 t sesame oil
  • 200 g rice
  • whole sesame seeds, to taste

Seasoning

  • 1 T gochujang
  • 1 T dark soy sauce
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 T chili powder
  • 1 t minced garlic
  • 60 ml of water

How to create

  • Cut the fish cakes (2-3 slices) into thick strips and the onion (1/2) into thin slices.
  • Make the marinade by whisking together 1 T sugar, 1 T chili powder, 1 T dark soy sauce, 1 T hoisin sauce, 1 T minced garlic, and 60 ml water in a small bowl.
  • Heat 2 T of cooking oil in a skillet and fry the eggs to cook through. Set the finished fried egg aside.
  • In the same pan over medium heat, add the fish cakes and onions and stir-fry.
Seasoning the stir-fried fish cakes and onions.
  • Once the fish cakes and onions are golden brown, add the prepared seasoning.
The marinade simmers and blends into the fish cakes.
  • Reduce the heat to low, and stir-fry the spices, making sure they don't burn.
  • Place 200 grams of rice in a bowl and top with fried fish cakes and a fried egg.
  • Finally, drizzle with 1 T sesame oil and sprinkle with whole sesame seeds to finish.

Caveats & tips

  • Additional toppings: Add sliced chives, scallions, sesame leaves, and green chiles to your taste. The flavors will come alive.
  • Fire control: If you cook the gochujang on high heat after it's seasoned, it can easily burn and become bitter. Be sure to cook it on low heat.
  • Meals application: One bowl is filling without any side dishes, and the leftover fried fish cakes can be used as a side dish for the next meal.
