Preparation materials

  • 3 slices of bread
  • 1 egg
  • 60 ml milk
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices ham, sliced
  • Strawberry Jam
  • A pinch of salt to taste
  • Bacon can be substituted for ham

Cook with 1 T=15 cc, 1 t=5 cc measuring spoons.

How to make a Monte Cristo sandwich

One side of the bread is spread with a thin layer of strawberry jam.
  • Prepare the bread: Spread a thin layer of strawberry jam on one side of the bread. Too much jam can overpower the sweetness, so it's best to spread it as thinly as possible.
  • Top with ham and cheese: Place the ham on the jam-slathered bread. Place the ham around the edge of the bread and cut another slice of ham to fill in the gaps. Place two slices of cheddar cheese on top in the same way.
  • Stacking sandwiches: Spread the strawberry jam on one side of another slice of bread and stack it, jam-side down. Repeat the process to make three stacks of sandwiches.
  • Prepare the egg wash: Prepare the egg wash by whisking 1 egg, 60 ml milk, and a pinch of flavoring salt in a bowl.
  • Egg wash: Brush the egg wash evenly over the entire sandwich, including the sides, to ensure even cooking.
  • Bake a sandwich: Cook the sandwiches in a heated skillet over low heat with cooking oil. It's best to use cooking oil because butter can burn before the cheese melts. Cook slowly over low heat.
  • Crop after completion: When cutting, make two diagonal cuts to get a nice shape.

Make a crispy Monte Cristo sandwich

  • Dip in egg wash and bread crumbs: Dip in the egg wash and then coat evenly in the breadcrumbs.
  • Bake to crisp: Use the same method to crisp them up in the pan and enjoy a Monte Cristo sandwich that's crispy on the outside and moist on the inside!

Alternative ingredients and cooking tips

  • You can substitute bacon for the ham, and the flavor will be deeper with bacon.
  • In addition to cheddar cheese, you can use mozzarella cheese for a more chewy flavor.
