This chopsteak recipe is an easy way to whip up an upscale dish for a home party with simple ingredients. With plenty of beef and a variety of vegetables, it's easy to recreate the flavor of a restaurant meal at home. It's simple to make with just ketchup and pork cutlet sauce, so it's easy for anyone to follow along. It's a favorite among young and old alike, and makes a great side dish or snack!
Characteristics of different cuts of beef
In this chopsteak recipe, I used tenderloin, but you can use other cuts of meat if you prefer. Chopsteaks have a tender texture and flavor, so use the characteristics of each cut as a guide:
- Peace of mind: It's soft and grainy, great for kids and seniors, easy to chew, and has a light flavor.
- Sirloin: It has just the right amount of fat to make it tender and flavorful. When used on chops, it adds a savory, hearty flavor.
- Flesh: They're low in fat, but they're reasonably priced and have a great chewy texture.
What is a chopsteak?
Chop steak is a Western-style dish of small cubes of beef stir-fried with a variety of vegetables. "Chop" means "to slice" or "to shred," and as the dish's name suggests, the beef is cut into bite-sized pieces. Chopsteak is known to have originated in the United States, but in Korea, it's a favorite localized version with sweet and savory sauces.
Chopsteaks are a favorite for home parties and quick meals because they require few ingredients and short cooking times to make a delicious dish. Onions, bell peppers, and broccoli are just a few of the vegetables used with the tender beef. The sauce, a mixture of soy sauce, ketchup, steak sauce, and sugar, adds flavor, and the combination of savory and sweet flavors makes this dish a crowd-pleaser.

The process of making chopsteaks
Trimming materials
Cut the beef into bite-sized pieces, and dice the onions and peppers into bite-sized pieces. Chopsteaks don't really care about the cut of meat, so use whatever you prefer. You can use just one color of paprika, but I recommend mixing two or more colors for an appetizing look.
Sautéing beef
In a skillet over medium heat, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and add the beef and sauté until browned on all sides. When the meat is halfway cooked, add the minced garlic and sauté together to add flavor.
Stir-frying vegetables together
Add all the trimmed onions and paprika and sauté quickly over high heat. You don't want to sauté for long to preserve the crunchy texture of the vegetables.
Add a source
Turn the heat to medium-high, add 3 tablespoons of ketchup and 3 tablespoons of tonkatsu sauce, and season with 2 pinches of salt and pepper. Stir-fry evenly to combine the sauces and ingredients.
Complete
Once everything is well combined and cooked, remove from heat and finish with a sprinkle of parsley if desired. These chopsteaks are easy to prepare and perfect for a home party. It's also a great side dish for rice because it's so well seasoned!
Alternative ingredients and cooking tips
- In addition to paprika, you can add broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, garlic, and more for a heartier flavor.
- You can also use steak sauce or Worcestershire sauce instead of tonkatsu sauce.
- You can use a cooking oil such as canola oil instead of olive oil, but the flavor of the sauce will be a little off.
